Blue Badge Scheme

What is the Blue Badge Scheme?

The Blue Badge Scheme provides a national arrangement of parking concessions for people with severe walking difficulties who travel either as drivers or passengers. The Scheme also applies to registered blind people, and people with very severe upper limb disabilities who regularly drive a vehicle but cannot turn a steering wheel by hand.

It allows badge holders to park close to their destination, but the national concessions apply only to on-street parking.

How to apply for or renew a Blue Badge:

New applications

If you live in the borough of Redcar & Cleveland and you think you may be entitled to a badge you should apply to the Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council Regeneration Services Department. The application form is available to download and print on Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's website.

Renewal of badges

Badges are valid for three years and badge holders should apply at least four weeks before the expiry date which is printed on the badge.

To apply for a renewal of your badge download the same application form used for new applications and return with one recent passport quality photograph and your fee.

Renewals are not always automatic. Some applicants may find that they are refused a badge on renewal if their original eligibility assessment was less robust. This is not because of a change to the groups of disabled people who are eligible for a badge, but because of a more robust assessment of that eligibility. In order for us to assess eligibility, applicants may be required to attend an independent mobility assessment. You must return your current badge or you will not be issued with your new badge. You will be contacted when your new Blue Badge is ready to be collected from Redcar & Cleveland House, Kirkleatham Street, Redcar, TS10 1RT. You must bring your old Blue Badge with you.

Photographs and fee

The Blue Badge is a two-sided card with space for a photograph of the badge holder on the back of the card. Your application should be accompanied by two recent passport quality photographs, both of which you must sign on the back. Photographs must not be more than 12 months old, and should be of a quality that can be digitally scanned.

Your photographs will be returned if your application is unsuccessful.
